It might sound peculiar, but a practical trick to ensure your plants stay hydrated while you’re away for an extended period is to leave a nail in them. Here’s how it works.

When gearing up for a vacation, the common dilemma is how to maintain proper hydration for our plants in our absence, especially when regular watering may not be feasible. Many have found an unusual yet effective solution: creating a DIY irrigation system by leaving a nail in plants.

To implement this system, you’ll need a nail, at least 10 cm long, and a meter and a half of absorbent natural thread, such as wool, cotton, or hemp. Additionally, grab a bottle, with a larger bottle offering greater water release capacity and longer duration.

Here’s how to assemble the system. Take the nail and the thread, leaving about 10 cm of the wire above the nail’s head. Wrap the entire nail with the thread, leaving only 1-2 cm of free wire at the tip. After fully wrapping the nail, secure the thread with a knot. Now, you have two ends: one of 10 cm above the head of the nail and the other longer.

Take the longer end of the wire and attach a counterweight, like a longer nail or bolt. Secure the counterweight firmly to the wire. Submerge the entire system in water for a few minutes. The thread will absorb water and become soaked.

After soaking, take the system out of the water and grab the bottle. Fill the bottle with water and insert the counterweight with the wire into the bottle. Ensure that the nail goes into the soil inside the pot where the plant is located. This setup allows water to be distributed to the plant’s roots through the capillarity principle.

The capillarity principle relies on water’s ability to rise in small tubes, such as plant blood vessels. Through cohesion and adhesion forces, water moves against gravity, facilitating plant irrigation via capillary transport.

With this DIY irrigation system, water is gradually released to the plant roots, keeping them hydrated over time. The absorbent wire serves as a transport channel, transferring water from the bottle to the surrounding soil.

As the soil dries, water is carried by the wire fibers, gradually falling into the soil drop by drop, ensuring constant and appropriate watering for the plants.
